Creaming butter and sugar

The basis of making any cake without an electric whisk or mixer, the butter must be soft (10-20 seconds in the microwave usually does the trick). Use a wooden spoon to squash the butter and sugar together vigorously until smooth and creamy and there is no loose sugar left. Children tend to smear the mixture around the sides of the bowl so try and encourage them to work it against the bottom of the bowl.
