Chopped onions are in so many savoury dishes, so teaching kids how to dice a whole onion safely is really handy for them to know. I find it easiest if an adult cuts the onion in half first, then the child can remove the skin. Always place the flat side face down on the board so it’s not wobbling around and carefully slice the onion into strips (removing the tip first). After discarding the root, the strips can then easily be cut into smaller chunks. I always steer clear of slicing across the onion as this is when kids tend to cut themselves. Another really useful skill to practise is softening the chopped onion in a little oil on a low heat for several minutes, before adding the rest of the ingredients.
