These homemade Twiglets are a bit fiddly to make, but if you've got some time and the kids are bored this will be an awesome way to keep them busy. The best thing is that it doesn't matter what they look like, Twiglets aren't the prettiest of snacks anyway. But they do taste remarkably like the real thing. If you're short of time, use all of the dough and make giant ones (just remember to bake them for 5-10 minutes longer).
  1. 125g strong white flour
  2. 1/4 teaspoon dried yeast
  3. 1/4 teaspoon salt
  4. 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  5. 1 teaspoon olive oil (plus extra for greasing)
  6. 1 tablespoon Marmite
  1. Mix the flour, yeast, salt & sugar in a bowl
  2. Make a well in the centre and add the olive oil and a drizzle of warm water
  3. Stir and continue adding water until you have a moist, slightly sticky dough
  4. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for five minutes until it feels smooth and elastic
  5. Put back into the bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave to prove for half an hour
  6. Preheat the oven to 180°C and grease a baking tray with a generous drizzle of olive oil
  7. Split the dough into two pieces and wrap one half in cling film to freeze and use at a later date
  8. Break off small pieces of the remaining dough and on a clean & dry (but not floured, you need a bit of grip) surface roll the pieces of dough into very thin sausages
  9. Cut the sausages into six inch sections and lay them on the baking tray
  10. Heat the Marmite in the microwave for a few seconds so it goes runny
  11. Using a teaspoon drizzle the tray of Twiglets with the Marmite (don't worry if you make a mess)
  12. Bake for 10 minutes until crisp, then whilst they're still warm carefully transfer them to a wire rack to cool
