Take your kids on a pasta treasure hunt with Jamie Oliver’s Guide to Italian Pasta (plus the most delicious pasta one-pot recipe ever!)

I’m fascinated by food history, so as well as giving me a great excuse to post my delicious new Lamb Pasta One Pot recipe, this Italian Pasta guide from Jamie’s Italian also offers a fascinating insight into the origins of some well known and lesser known types of pasta. As silly as it sounds I’d never even thought about the fact that every time I say “spaghetti”, “penne” or “lasagne” I’m speaking Italian. Kids will love all the literal translations, such as “priest’s ears” and “little hats”, as well as the individual stories about how each type of pasta was created. Next time you’re shopping, take this guide along and see how many different types of pasta your kids can spot!

Jamie

Orzo (meaning “barley” because it’s shaped like a grain of barley) pasta, the type used in this pasta one-pot doesn’t actually feature in Jamie’s guide, but it’s one of my faves and you could use any small pasta shells or even mini alphabet pasta. It’s perfect for a one-pot, as like risotto rice it exudes starch as it cooks, a natural thickener for the sauce, and it’s widely available in most supermarkets.

There are loads of jobs your kids can get involved in from rolling the meatballs to chopping up the onion, garlic and the herbs at the end. Some of the ingredients like chilli, anchovies and olives are of course optional, but why not use this as an opportunity to introduce your kids to some new and exciting flavours!
